The ceremonial boulevard was first called the Kingsway, which was a central axis in the city of New Delhi after the British Raj shifted its capital to the city from Calcutta (now known as Kolkata) in 1911. After India attained its independence, Kingsway was renamed as ‘Rajpath’, and Queensway that perpendicular to the Kingsway and it was newly rechristened as ‘Janpath’.
