Find RDR2 Legendary Fish guide with maps (2024)

Much like Red Dead Redemption 2’s Legendary Animals, there are 13 Legendary Fish scattered around the world. Unlike the Legendary Animals, the Legendary Fish are tied to a side quest, so you’ll have to do a bit of work before you set out to catch these river monsters (we’re trying very hard to limit our River Monsters references for this guide).

There are a few things you need to do to pick up this side quest and make it easier to complete. This guide will let you know where to find the quest, “A Fisher of Fish,” and its associated map, tell you where you find the lures you need, then show you maps of each Legendary Fish’s location.

You’ll find Jeremy on a dock at a location conveniently named Gill Point along the northern shore of Flat Iron Lake. He’s not too far from the gang’s second Camp location. He’s just to the west of the border between New Hanover and Lemoyne, northwest of Rhodes. Ride along the shore and watch for the shack and pier — it’s the only structure around there.

After he introduces himself, he’ll ask you to mail him the 13 Legendary Fish (gross) and give you a restaurant placemat-type map with their locations. The map is accurate enough to get you close (but our maps below are much better).

A quick note: These fish tend to be much larger than normal fish, so they’ll take up the entire trunk slot on your horse. Just ride to a Post Office between each excursion to mail it off.

Once you have the map of Legendary Fish locations, you’ll need to buy some special bait to catch them. You can catch them with normal bait, but you’ll have to sort through the non-Legendary fish you catch, and it’ll take you a lot longer.

For the lures, head to Lagras. It’s a small settlement a little northwest of Saint Denis on the north edge of Bayou Nwa and on the south edge of Bluewater Marsh. Here, you can pick up the Special Lake Lure, Special River Lure and Special Swamp Lures for $15 each ($45 total).

    New Hanover Legendary Fish

There are four Legendary Fish in New Hanover.

    Legendary Chain Pickerel

You’ll find the Legendary Chain Pickerel in the Dakota River along the border between West Elizabeth and New Hanover. It’s just to the west of the abandoned town of Limpany and northwest of Flatneck Station.

Use the Special River Lure to catch it.

    Legendary Perch

The Legendary Perch is in the Elysian Pool. This pond is to the southwest of Annesburg and northwest of Van Horn Trading Post — it’s also a little north of the Legendary Beaver location and the best place to find beavers.

Use the Special Lake Lure for this fish.

    Legendary Steelhead Trout

Find RDR2 Legendary Fish guide with maps (12) Rockstar Games via Polygon

The Legendary Steelhead Trout is in the far northeast corner of the map, north of Annesburg, at the northern end of the Roanoke Valley. It’s just to the east of the Legendary Moose location.

Use the Special Lake Lure for it.

    Legendary Muskie

You’ll find the Legendary Muskie right next to Van Horn Trading Post. It hangs out off the rocky shore around the east side of the lighthouse. You can catch it from the shore, but it’s a headache to walk back across the rocks to your horse.

Instead, look around for a canoe — there’s usually one at the dock just to the north or on the beach on the north end of town. Paddle out toward the lighthouse, then look around for some fish.

Use the Legendary River Lure to catch this one.

    Ambarino Legendary Fish

There is only one Legendary Fish in Ambarino.

    Legendary Sockeye Salmon

You’ll find the Legendary Sockeye Salmon in the iced-over Lake Isabella on the western edge of Ambarino. It’s northwest of Valentine and just south of the Legendary White Bison location.

If you don’t see the telltale red flash of a salmon in the thawed part of the lake right where the icon is, head a little to the north and try near the shore there instead.

Use the Special Lake Lure here.

    West Elizabeth Legendary Fish

There are two Legendary Fish in West Elizabeth, but you’ll only be able to get to one of them for much of the game.

Since the other fish, the Legendary Rock Bass, is a very late-game catch, it’s the last fish we discuss at the very bottom of this guide (below the spoiler alert image). It may technically be in West Elizabeth, but it’s effectively in an area that we won’t mention up here for spoiler reasons. You can catch it after you’ve fished the campaign.

    Legendary Smallmouth Bass

The Legendary Smallmouth Bass is one of the easiest to get to. It’s in lake Owanjila just to the west of Strawberry.

Use the Special Lake Lure to catch it.

    Lemoyne Legendary Fish

There are four Legendary Fish in Lemoyne. There is one you cannot catch until you progress quite a way through the game — .

    Legendary Bluegill

The Legendary Bluegill is located just south of the gang’s second camp at Clement’s Point to the southwest of Rhodes.

Use the Special Lake Lure for this fish.

    Legendary Longnose Gar

You’ll find the Legendary Longnose Gar in Bayou Nwa just to the southeast of Lagras (where you bought your Special Lures) and northwest of Saint Denis.

There are a lot of alligators around this area, so watch for those. This is another fish that’s difficult to get to, so look around for a canoe. We found a couple parked on the shore a little to the east of the location marked on the map.

Use the Special Swamp Lure here.

    Legendary Lake Sturgeon

This fish is located close to Saint Denis. It’s just to the southwest of the city along the railroad line there — in fact, you’ll pass right by this location if you follow our recommended path for the Horseman Challenge 6.

If you don’t have luck catching this one from the shore, you can fish from the railroad trestle instead. Just watch out for trains.

Use the Special River Lure for this fish.

To catch the Legendary Bullhead Catfish, ride to the shores west of Siska Penitentiary, north of Saint Denis. At the location shown in gallery’s first image above, you’ll find a canoe. Get in (with Triangle/Y) and paddle east to the islands in the distance.

Four islands comprise the area with the jail. Paddle to the western edge of the southern group of islands. You can see the exact location of the fish in the gallery above. It’s the space between the big northern island and the medium-sized island south of that — the one without the penitentiary.

Cast your line from the northern shore of island (again, see the gallery above) using your Special River Lure, and you’ll hook the Legendary Bullhead Catfish.

There are three Legendary Fish located in New Austin. You’ll be able to access this location and these fish after you finish the campaign and begin the Epilogue.

The Legendary Redfin Pickerel is west of Thieves Landing and east of MacFarlane’s Ranch, in an area marked as Stillwater Creek on your map, which is south of the Lower Montana River.

Look for a shack in the area shown on the map above. Just beyond the shack is a small pier that overlooks a pond. Head onto the pier and cast your Special Lake Lure into the pond to catch the Legendary Redfin Pickerel.

The Legendary Largemouth Bass is located Southeast of Armadillo, southeast of Lake Don Julio, off the shores of the San Luis River. Despite it being in a river, use your Special Lake Lure to catch it.

The Legendary Rock Bass is located west of Blackwater, in an area marked as Tall Tress on your map. (Technically, this is West Elizabeth, though it sure feels a lot like New Austin.) At the end of a trail on the far western edge, you’ll find a shack labeled as Swadlass Point (at least that’s what it looks like to us) and a lake called Aurora Basin, which is the important part.

Follow the broken pier out over Aurora Basin, and use your Special Lake Lure to hook the Legendary Rock Bass.
