Features and Benefits

Engage and motivate students through real data.

  • UPDATED - Real data—In the 14th Edition, the vast majority of exercises, examples, and Chapter Problems are based on real data to make the course as relevant as possible. For instance, 93% of the exercises use real data, showing students that statistics truly are all around us, and 64% of exercises are new to the 14th edition, keeping the problems current.

  • REVISED - 46 data sets, available in Appendix B and the MyMathLab for School, are referenced throughout the exercise sets, marked with a data set icon. Using these data sets help students gain statistical literacy and teach them to apply the same methodology and thought processes used by professional statisticians.

    • Expanded data sets in Appendix B have increased from 32 to 46 total, with 20 new to the14th Edition—including Internet Traffic, Disney World Wait Times, Car Data, Commute Times, Candies, and Taxi Data.

    • Larger data sets include data sets with 6068, 3982, 5755, 8959, and 1000 cases, as well as big data sets with 465,506 cases and 31,784 cases. Working with such larger data sets is essential to students progressing into the age of big data and data science.

  • NEW - Big (or Very Large) Data Projects are located near the end of each chapter.

  • UPDATED - A Chapter Problem opens each chapter, using real data to motivate students about the concepts they’re about to learn. Chapter Problems are revisited within the chapter. All Chapter Problems have been replaced with new problems in the 14th Edition.

    • NEW - Chapter Problem icons (marked with a CP) indicate examples that relate to the Chapter Problem, demonstrating how different statistical concepts and procedures can be applied to the real-world issue highlighted in the Chapter.

  • REVISED - Margin Essays—134 margin essays highlight real-world topics and foster student interest. 36 are new to this edition. Also, many Go Figure items briefly describe interesting numbers or statistics.

Give students the fundamentals they need to apply procedures, interpret data, and develop statistical thinking.

  • Readability is paramount in this text. Great care is taken to ensure that all students can find the text readable and applicable.

  • Chapter Objectives summarize key learning goals for each section in the chapter.

  • Your Turn feature in many examples directs students to an applicable exercise so that they can immediately practice what they just learned in an example.

  • Flowcharts throughout the text help to simplify and clarify more complex concepts and procedures in a visual way. New animated and narrated versions of the text’s flow charts and associated homework are assignable in MyMathLab for School, breaking down difficult concepts and allowing students to gain stronger statistical thinking.

  • End of chapter features not only reinforce skills and concepts, but also ask students to think critically.

    • Chapter Quick Quiz, Review Exercises, and Cumulative Review provide the all-important practice students need to retain what they’ve learned.

    • Other features ask students to think more conceptually. Collaborative Group Activities foster active learning, and From Data to Decision is a capstone problem for the chapter that requires critical thinking and writing.

  • The Student Workbook offers additional examples, concept exercises, and vocabulary exercises for each chapter, available in print or to download in the MyMathLab for School course. Full solutions are available for instructors. Integrated Review Worksheets are also included in the Student Workbook.

Encourage the development of conceptual understanding for data analysis—a recommendation from the GAISE standards—with statistical software and technology. A variety of statistical technologies are integrated throughout the text, and support for each helps students at point-of-use.

  • Sections end with a new Tech Center subsection, where appropriate, that includes new technology-specific videos and detailed instructions for statistical software.

    • NEW - New technology is integrated throughout. R and Google Sheets are included as an additional technology in the end-of-section Tech Centers where appropriate.

    • The technologies of Statdisk, Minitab®, Excel®, StatCrunch®, and TI-83/84 Plus® calculators continue to be included in the Tech Centers.

    • Statdisk is a free and robust browser-based statistical program designed specifically for this book. This is the only statistics textbook with dedicated and comprehensive statistics software. This can be downloaded at the author’s site – TriolaStats.com, or at pearsonhighered.com/triola.

  • A Technology Project is included with the end-of-chapter features.

  • Many screen displays appear throughout the book, and some exercises are based on displayed results from technology.
