Biography

Cecelia, daughter of John O'Toole and Mary Murphy, was born 26 May 1905 in San Jose, Santa Clara, California.[1] Cecelia's middle name is given both as Marcella and Frances.

Cecelia attended St. Joseph School and Notre Dame High School.

From 1923 until her marriage in 1926, Cecelia worked as a clerk and lived at home with her mother at 750 Spencer Street in San Jose.

Marriage and Children

Married: Cecelia married George Bryan Capes, son of Edgar Bernard Capes and Catherine Jane Conroy, in 1926 in San Jose. They obtained a marriage license on 22 July 1926 as evidenced by the following vital statistic reported in the local newspaper:
"CAPES-O'TOOLE: George B. Capes, 26, San Francisco, and Cecelia F. O'Toole, 21, San Jose.”[2]
The couple had four daughters.
By 1930, Cecelia and husband, George, had moved to San Francisco where George was employed as an electrician.

Death and Burial

Death: Cecelia died on 24 March 1949 in Los Gatos, Santa Clara, California.[3]
Obituary: "Services Conducted For Mrs. G. B. Capes. Final rites were conducted at National Cemetery, San Francisco, Monday for Mrs. Cecelia Marcella Capes, resident of Los Gatos who died here March 24. Mrs. Capes was the wife of George B. Capes and the mother of Lucille, Catherine, Lo Rene, and Sheila Capes, all of Los Gatos. In addition, she was the sister of Sister Anastasia Marie of the Sisters of Notre Dame. A native of San Jose, Mrs. Capes was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John O’Toole. She attended St. Joseph’s School, and Notre Dame High School at San Jose. She had resided in Los Gatos for about three years. The Rosary was recited at St. Mary’s church, Los Gatos, Friday evening and requiem mass was celebrated at the church Saturday morning with the Rev. Lester Ehrmann officiating. Pallbearers were Gunnar Petersen, James, Vernon, and Ellsworth Peterson, William Carreia, and Mark Cunningham, all cousins of the deceased."[4]
Funeral Notice: "Cecelia Capes Funeral Held. Los Gatos, March 26. – Requiem mass for Mrs. Cecelia Marcella Capes, native of San Jose, was celebrated today in St. Mary’s Church here after services in the W. B. Ward Chapel, San Jose. The Rev. Lester I. Ehrmann conducted mass. Pallbearers were Gunnar Petersen, James, Vernon and Ellsworth Petersen, William Carreia and Mark Cunningham. Mrs. Capes died Thursday. She leaves daughters Lucille, Catherine, Lo Rene and Sheila Capes, Los Gatos, and a sister, Sister Anastasia Marie of the Sisters of Notre Dame."[5]
Burial: On 26 March 1949, Cecelia was buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, San Mateo, California.[6]
