  • Tyrone Power, Sr. asked his good friend, Fritz Lieber, to give Tyrone Power a job in his Shakespearean company. He was assigned to a very small role in The Merchant of Venice, in which his dad played Duke of Venice, at Chicago's Civic Auditorium.

1932

  • January 2 - Funeral services were held for Tyrone Power, Sr. His ashes were to be buriedat Isle Aux Noix, Quebec, his former home.
  • Tyrone Power's mom moved back to California, to a home in Santa Barbara.
  • Tyrone Power decided to stay in Hollywood to give movies a try, but he found it almost impossible to find work in movies.
  • He got a small part in Tom Brown of Culver, which was released June 12.
  • Tyrone Power became involved in community theater, while still visiting studios, trying to get into movies.

1933

  • May 16 - He performed in Low and Behold, Pasadena Community Playhouse, Pasadena California.
  • To supplement his income, Tyrone Power became a chauffeur to one of his dad's old friends , screenwriter Arthur Caesar.
  • He worked at Santa Barbara's Lobero Theater for a time.
  • He got a one-day job in Flirtation Walk (no lines, no billing).
  • Upon the advice of Arthur Caesar, he decided to leave Hollywood and go to New York to give Broadway a try.

1934

  • En route to New York, he stopped in Chicago and visited with friend, Don Ameche.
  • Ameche convinced Tyrone Power to stay on in Chicago to work in radio and to work in a stand at the World Fair that showed how movies were made.
  • He continued to work in Chicago, finding steady work, for a time, at a stock company.
  • October - Tyrone Power's future wife, Annabella, married Jean Murat.
  • November - Tyrone Power got a job in a play called Romance at a local theater. The show ran for 8 weeks
  • He decided Chicago wasn't the place to further his acting career, despite being able to make a little money. The low point was when he was asked to read comic strips on radio.
  • Tyrone Power left Chicago to try his luck with the stage, in New York.

1935

  • Tyrone Power met Blanche Oelrichs (pen name: Michael Strange), a friend of his mom. She, in turn, introduced him to Guthrie McClintic, Katharine Cornell's husband. (Blanche Oelrichs was also the great-aunt to Marjorie Oelrichs, who married Eddy Duchin.)
  • McClintic hired him as an understudy for The Flowers of the Forest.
  • April 8 - Flowers of the Forest opened on Broadway. Tyrone Power was an understudy for Burgess Meredith, John Emery, and Hugh Williams, but they never missed a performance.
  • summer - Tyrone Power joined a stock company in West Falmouth, Massachusetts, where he performed in plays throughout the summer.
  • Katharine Cornell gave him a role in her upcoming play, Romeo and Juliet.
  • December 23 - Romeo and Juliet opened on Broadway. Tyrone Power played Benvolio.
  • A Hollywood scout for Universal spotted Tyrone Power on Broadway, and Universal offered him a movie contract. Katharine Cornell advised against it, saying he needed more acting experience.

1936

  • Katharine Cornell gave Tyrone Power a substantial role in St. Joan.
  • March - Tyrone Power's good friend, Don Ameche, decided to give Hollywood another try and promptly established himself at 20th Century-Fox.
  • March 9 - St. Joan opened on Broadway, with Tyrone Power playing Bertrand de Poulengey. A scout for 20th Century-Fox spotted him.
  • 20th Century Fox did a screen test.
  • Darryl F. Zanuck was not impressed with Tyrone Power in the screen test, but his wife, Virginia, convinced him that Tyrone Power had potential for movie success.
  • Katharine Cornell advised Tyrone Power to go ahead and try his hand at Hollywood.
  • May - Tyrone Power returned to Hollywood and was given a second screen test, with Alice Faye.
  • Alice Faye's request that Tyrone Power be cast in her new movie, Sing, Baby, Sing, was granted.
  • Sidney Langfield, the director of Sing, Baby, Sing believed Tyrone Power had no future as a movie actor andasked that he be replaced in the movie.
  • Alice Faye interceded again and asked Zanuck to cast Tyrone Power in another movie. Tyrone Power was reassigned to Girls' Dormitory, where he has a couple lines at the end of the movie.
  • May 29 - Girls' Dormitory was released; Tyrone Power gained notice, as fans wrote in about the "that guy in the last scene".
  • October 29 - Ladies in Love was released (small role; seventh billed). This was the last time Tyrone Power was billed as Tyrone Power, Jr.
  • Tyrone Power again gained notice from reviews of Ladies in Love ; New York post review commented, "Tyrone Power, Jr., is as handsome as everyone seems to think Robert Taylor is."
  • Tyrone Power was chosen over Don Ameche for Lloyd's of London (Ameche had been penciled in for the role.)
  • November 27 - Tyrone Power became an overnight star upon the release of Lloyd's of London.

  • Tyrone Power's romantic life for 1937 included Sonja Henie.
  • March 3 - Love is News was released.
  • March 25 - He performed on NBC radio's Standard Brands Hour.
  • April 29 - Cafe Metropole was released.
  • May 31 - Tyrone Power got his hands and feet in cement at Grauman's.
  • August 29 - Thin Ice was released.
  • October 3 - June 6, 1928 - Tyrone Power hosted and starred in NBC radio's Jergens' Hollywood Playhouse.
  • November 22 - Second Honeymoon was released.

1938

  • January 4 - In Old Chicago released
  • May 28 - Alexander's Ragtime Band was released.
  • Tyrone Power was loaned out to MGM to do Marie Antoinette for first (and only) time during contract with 20th Century-Fox.
  • During the filming of Marie Antoinette Tyrone Power was having a romance with Janet Gaynor, whom he'd begun dating before filming of Marie Antoinette. Rumors flew that they will be married.
  • During the filming of Suez Tyrone Power became romantically interested in co-star, Annabella.
  • After the filming of Suez, Annabella returned to France to divorce Jean Murat.
  • July 13 - Marie Antoinette was released.
  • August 26 - September 16 - Jesse James was filmed on location in and around Pineville, Missouri, in the Ozarks. Tyrone Power flew with director Henry King in King's plane, where King allowed him to fly the plane for awhile. This was the start of Tyrone Power's love of flying. Upon return to Hollywood, he began taking flying lessons.
  • October 10 - Annabella announced her impending divorce from Jean Murat.
  • December 4 - The SS Southern Prince left Buenos Aires, Argentina, headed to New York. Tyrone Power was on the ship (boarded at Rio de Janeiro).

1939

  • Three of Tyrone Power's movies (Alexander's Ragtime Band, Marie Antoinette, and In Old Chicago ) were chosen by Film Daily as three of the best ten movies of 1938.
  • January 1, 1939 - February 5, 1939 - Tyrone Power hosted and starred in NBC radio's Jergens' Hollywood Playhouse.
  • January 13 - His first Technicolor film (Jesse James)was released. It was a blockbuster and was re-issued frequently throughout the years.
  • Fannie Brice sued 20th Century-Fox, Darryl F. Zanuck, and Tyrone Power for his role in Rose of Washington Square (20th Century-Fox settled the suit by paying her $25,000).
  • April 23 - Tyrone Power married Annabella.
  • The Powers honeymooned in Rome.
  • May 8 - Tyrone Power's first movie after his marriage, Rose of Washington Square was released. The studio had beenapprehensive that his marriage could affect box-office. (It didn't. Fans flocked to see him in Rose of Washington Square )
  • Tyrone Power wanted to change the types of roles he was doing and asked Zanuck for more dramatic roles. To comply with Tyrone Power's request, Zanuck assigned him The Rains Came.
  • June 6 - Tyrone Power appeared in NBC radio's RCA Magic Key, All-American Broadcast (Scenes from "Second Fiddle" with Tyrone Power in Hollywood and Sonja Henie in Oslo, Norway).
  • July 3 - Second Fiddle was released.
  • Annabella was worried about her parents as war in Europe loomed. Tyrone Power and Annabella went to France, brought backher mother, who would live in their Brentwood home.
  • September 1 - The Dixie Clipper departed from Marseille to Port Washington, New York. Tyrone Power and Annabella were passengers.
  • Two or three weeks later, Annabella returned to bring Annie, her daughter, to America.
  • September 11 - The Rains Came was released.
  • November 16 - Day-Time Wife was released.
  • Tyrone Power was named King of the Movies for 1939.

1940

  • January 7 - Tyrone Power performed in The Petrified Forest on CBS radio's Screen Guild Players, with Joan Bennett and Humphrey Bogart.
  • May 8 - Johnny Apollo was released.
  • Germans came through Belgium to France (skirting the Maginot Line); Annabella became increasingly agitated, worrying about her family and friends left in France. Her marriage was becoming strained, due to her beingstressed about what was happening in Europe.
  • August 27 - Brigham Young - Frontiersman was released.
  • November 1 - The Mark of Zorro was released; the movie is a huge success and would become his "signature" role.
  • November 18 - Tyrone Power and his wife, Annabella, performed The Rage of Manhattan on CBS Lux Radio Theater.
  • December 15 - Tyrone Power and his wife, Annabella, performed Seventh Heaven on CBS radio's Screen Guild Players.
  • Tyrone Power was named "King of the Movies" for the second straight year.

1941

  • January - Tyrone Power was in Mexico for the filming of Blood and Sand.
  • May 22 - Blood and Sand was released and was a huge hit.
  • August 11 - Tyrone Power and Annabella opened the stage play, Liliom, at The Country Playhouse, Westport, Connecticut. The play was to run for two weeks and was sold-out for the entire run, largely to socialites and celebrities.
  • August 13 - Despite the fact that Liliom was scheduled for a two-week run and was sold out, Tyrone Power rushed back to Hollywood to re-film the ending of Yank in the R.A.F., on orders from his studio.
  • After re-shooting the ending of Yank in the R.A.F., Tyrone Power returned to Connecticut to fulfill his commitment for the stage production, Liliom.
  • September 9 - Yank in the R.A.F. was released.
  • September 24 - Tyrone Power read the script for This Above All and was impressed with it.
  • October 20 - Tyrone Power and Annabella appeared in Blood and Sand on CBS Lux Radio Theater.
  • December 7 - News of Pearl Harbor set Tyrone Power to thinking about military service.

  • January 6 - Son of Fury released
  • February 23 - Tyrone Power performed on DuPont Cavalcade of America (NBC radio): Arrowsmith.
  • Spring - Annabella toured the country in stage play, Blithe Spirit. She spent six months in Chicago with the play.
  • Tyrone Power was assigned Ten Gentlemen from West Point, with Maureen O'Hara, but turned it down.
  • April 6 - Tyrone enlisted in the Naval Reserves at 90 Church Street, New York. Pending callto active duty, he was assigned to air-raid watch twice weekly.(The Navy later claimed to have no record of an enlistment. It is thought that 20th Century-Fox conspired withthe Navy to keep him out of service.)
  • April 6 - Tyrone Power performed on DuPont Cavalcade of America (NBC radio): Yellow Jack.
  • May 13 - This Above All was released.
  • May 25 - Tyrone Power performed on DuPont Cavalcade of America (NBC radio): Young Thomas Jefferson.
  • July 10 - Annabella became a U.S. citizen.
  • July - Tyrone Power was filming Crash Dive. While filming, he went to the Navy recruiting station to ask about when he might be called to active duty. No records were found with respect to his enlistment.
  • August 24 - Discovering that his Navy enlistment had fallen through, Tyrone Power enlisted in the U.S.M.C.
  • September 14 - Tyrone Power performed on Lux Radio Theater (CBS radio): This Above All, with Barbara Stanwyck.
  • October 16 - The Black Swan, which Tyrone Power thought would be his last movie for the duration of the war, was released.
  • October 26 - Tyrone Power , Betty Grable, and John Sutton performed on Screen Guild Players (CBS radio): A Yank in the R.A.F..
  • Tyrone Power thought that he was going to be starting active duty, but he was told by his Marine Corps superiors that he neededto report back to the Fox lot to finish Crash Dive, which would be a good military recruitment movie.

1943

  • January 4 - Private Tyrone Power arrived in San Diego to begin 7 weeks of boot camp training.
  • January 5 - Private Tyrone Power began 7 weeks of boot camp training.
  • At the end of basic training, he was awarded badges for marksmanship and sharp shooting; was named "honor man" of his platoon; was chosen for Officer's Candidate School.
  • April 4 - Tyrone and 72 other U.S. marines left San Diego for Quantico, VA to attend Officers' Candidate School.
  • April 23 - Crash Dive, Tyrone Power's last movie until the duration of the war, was released
  • May 26 - Tyrone Power's niece, Neeltje Adelaide Hardenbergh, was born to his sister Anne, and her husband, Elmer Peter Hardenbergh. Sister Anne was staying at the Power home in Brentwood during this time.
  • June 2 - Tyrone Power completed Officer's Candidate School and was commissioned second lieutenant.
  • As part of an ensemble cast,he made the short, Hollywood in Uniform; shown as Marine drill instructor in San Diego. (The short was released August 15, 1943).

  • Annabella joined Tyrone Power in Corpus Christi, staying in a hotel, while he trained.
  • October 24 - He performed on We the People (CBS radio): Tyrone discussed his boot camp training.
  • October 27 - He was emcee for Navy Day Special from Corpus Christi (NBC radio).
  • During this year, Tyrone Power's wife returned to films, which she'd abandoned upon their marriage. Shedid two films (First We Raid Calais, released in March and Bomber's Moon, released in July).

1944

  • April 14 - Tyrone Power was promoted to first lieutenant and joined Marine Transport Squadron 352, 9th Marine Air Wing.
  • April 23 - Tyrone Power received his Navy Wings of Gold at the naval air station at Corpus Christi, Texas. Rear Adm. CharlesP. Mason, commandant of the training center, pinned on the wings.
  • As required for all new transport pilots, he attended Flight Instructor Instrument School at NAS Atlanta.
  • Tyrone Power visited Annabella in New York, where she was appearing in Jacobowsky and the Colonel .
  • August - Paris was liberated, and Annabella wanted to see her family again. She joined the USO (as star of Blithe Spirit which would be heading for Europe; in Italy, she boarded a military plane to Paris; spent several weeks with them before re-joining her Blithe Spirit troupe.
  • November 20 - Tyrone Power performed on Tonight in Hollywood (CBS radio): Sauce for the Goose, with Alice Faye and Ethel Merman.

1945

  • January - Tyrone Power was shipped to Pacific, with Marine Transport Squadron 353, Marine Air Group 21, 4th Marine Air Wing; based in Saipan.
  • He logged hundreds of hours in combat zones, taking supplies in and carrying wounded out; based at Kwaljalein, Saipan, Okinawa, Kyushu; among first pilots to fly supplies to Iowa Jima while under fire; while Okinawa was still under fire, he was one of the pilots who helped evacuate the wounded Yontan Airstrip, Okinawa; also made flights to Guam, Omura, Nogoya, and Tokyo.
  • A Japanese suicide squad on Okinawa destroyed one of the transport planes, killing those already on board.
  • August 6 - Hiroshima was bombed; Tyrone Power flew supplies to Marine troops there.
  • From Guam, Tyrone Power wrote to Henry King, telling him that he looked forward to making Captain from Castile upon his return to movies.
  • November 21 - Tyrone Power returned to Portland, Oregon, on USS Marvin H. McIntyr; Annabella was there; Tyrone Power returned to his home(now also home to his sister, niece, adopted daughter, Annie, and Annabella's mother); Tyrone Power also saw his mom, who lived in her own apartment.
  • December 17 - Tyrone Power signed a new contract with 20th Century-Fox, calling for 2 films per year. Three movies were announced as upcoming starring roles - The Razor's Edge, Captain from Castile, and The Black Rose.
  • For war-time service, he was awarded American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, and the World War II Victory Medal.
  • Tyrone Power and Annabella spent a month in Canada, as a second honeymoon.

  • January 6 - Tyrone Power performed on Hollywood Star Time (CBS radio): Seventh Heaven, with Jeanne Crain.
  • January 15 - Tyrone Power was discharged as a first lieutenant; assigned to 11th Marine Corps Reserve District.
  • Tyrone Power prepared for the movie The Dark Wood , a movie which was never filmed. (Zanuck assigned him this film, pending the final The Razor's Edge script. He thought it in Tyrone Power's best interest to keep busy, following his return from service, and The Razor's Edge was delayed by script revisions.)
  • March 20 - Tyrone Power appeared in a short for the American Red Cross.
  • exact date unknown - Tyrone Power made a ten-week goodwill flight, arranged by 20th Century-Fox, on his plane "Saludos Amigos" through 24 Latin American countries.
  • May 20 - Tyrone Power and Annabella hosted a party at their home. Someone at the party suggested that they play a game called "Sardines", which was Hollywood's version of "hide and seek" . During the game, David Niven's 28-year-old wife, Primula, opened a door that, in the darkness, she thought was a closet. Instead, it lead to the basement. She tumbled down the flight of 20 stairs and fractured her skull. She was rushed to the Santa Monica Hospital, where she died the next day.
  • August 27 - 20th Century-Fox announced that Tyrone Power would be flying his twin-engined plane, Saludos Amigos, on a two-month goodwill tour of Central and South America. The announcement said that the party would fly down the west coast of South America to Chile; then across the Andes Mountains to Argentina; and back up the east coast.
  • September - Annabella left for New York to prepare for the Broadway play, No Exit, against Tyrone Power's wishes.
  • October - Annabella announced formal separation from Ty; incompatibility of careers was listed as grounds.

Lanamade a quick introduction, though Tyrone Power mentioned that they had met previously (at his house, where she had met his wife, Annabella).
  • April 7 - Tyrone Power performed on Lux Radio Theater (CBS radio): Alexander's Ragtime Band, with Dinah Shore, Al Jolson, Dick Haymes, Margaret Whiting.

  • December 4 - The press reported Lana Turner's announcement that her romance with Tyrone Power was over. In her announcement, she said, "Ty has changed. He came back determined to spend his time fighting communism." (Ty had publicly commented, "From what I saw in Europe, I'm convinced the U.S. should adopt universal military training and be prepared for anything." Years later, Lana confessed that Tyrone Power had been the one to break off the relationship.

  • As Prince of Foxes was winding up shooting, Linda's sister joined Tyrone Power and Linda for the Christmas holidays. She also was put into a few scenes of the movie, in an uncredited part.

  • January 27 - Tyrone Power and Linda Christian married at Romina Francesca, 10th century Roman Catholic church in Rome.
  • Tyrone Power and Linda honeymooned in the Kitzbuhel, Austria, where they skied in the Alps.

The ran into a rain, hail, and snow storm. A washed-out bridge caused them to be lost for days, in the Atlas Mountains, and a search party was sent to find them.

  • September 20, 1949 - A spokesman for Tyrone Power announced that Linda had lost a baby and was recuperating in a Rome hospital. (According to Linda's autobiography - On their way to Paris, Tyrone Power was piloting a small plane when they encountered a violent storm. A couple hours after landing, Linda complained of pain and saw a doctor, who hospitalized her. Tyrone Power and Linda lost their child - a boy - in the hospital.)
  • October 22 - Tyrone Power and Linda boarded a plane from Paris to New York.

  • Tyrone finally completed his contract obligations for 20th Century-Fox by filming Untamed .

  • February 23 - The Dark Is Light Enough, opened, despite Tyrone Power not having fully recovered; his illness prevented him from giving his best performance.
